Business Cards and why they still matter . . . !

Business often begins from one important moment: that first impression. Much like an audition, you have minutes to present yourself, what you stand for and what you can do, so why should the judges choose you over hundreds of others who can offer the same thing? Well, in order to have someone even consider you in the first place, you need to actually stand out. So how do you do this?

In the business world, a great starting point is a good quality business card. Although we might deny it, we are all guilty of passing judgement about a person on a first meeting, an impression that may linger in all future forms of communication thereafter. Therefore, in this digital age, your business card is not only the physical reminder of your meeting but also the first step in building an effective client relationship.

Why Are GOOD Quality Business Cards so Important?

1) They Represent YOU

Having a business card shows you are prepared and professional and demonstrates that future business encounters will be handled in the same way. If the quality of that card is not good, then that meeting might not be remembered in a positive way later on, regardless of how good an impression you made.

Think about it like this. Would you turn up to a business meeting in ripped jeans and a t-shirt? Would you turn up in a tux? Being professional is not pretending to be something that you’re not, it is about being the best version of yourself, and this mentality should be reflected in your business card.

You don’t want your card to be a forgetful piece of paper containing just your contact details, that’s impersonal and will result in you being associated with the words cheap and lazy. Your card should represent your image whilst also having a ‘wow’ element to make you stand out and be remembered.

2) They Represent YOUR Business

Just as you want your potential client to walk away with a good impression of you, you also want them impressed with your business. A good quality business card not only shows them that you take pride in even the ‘little’ things but it also advocates what you can do, the skills that you have and the quality of your products. Again, you wouldn’t cut quality anywhere else in your business, so why wait until you get clients to show them what you can do? Your business card is your chance to show yourself in the best possible light and be more proactive with networking.

3) They Could Be the Difference Between a Client Choosing You or Another Business

As important as that first impression is, it is that lasting impression that counts. Handing over your business card at the end of a meeting is a key moment, that final chance you have of making a memorable impact, and it can go one of two ways:

Exchanging a slapdash business card – this can undo all the work you had previously done and can result in your brand being associated with the word cheap later on.
Handing over a distinctive business card that is unique and of a high standard – this will almost always spark further conversation, resulting in a relationship forming before the meeting has ended and a more likely contact in the near future.

4) They continuing to market for you. Creative business cards get shared and talked about.

If you meet someone and exchange email addresses and phone numbers you each walk away with another contact on your mobile phone but it ends there. If you hand over a creative business card, that’s different, real quality and stands out, then that makes a great impression and that person is likely to show it to other people. This puts you and your brand in front of additional prospects.

Let me ask you this question, what is more expensive? Investing a little more in a quality card and the above benefits or the potential loss of just one client?

In a world where the computer is our main source of communication, it has never been more important to stand out and have your first-class business cards at hand. They always have been and still are the stimulus for forming new client relationships whether in one-to-one meetings or networking events or even from indirectly being passed to new connections.

As a physical reminder of you and your business, a quality business card can make sure that the impression you leave is a great one.
